Over 20 Olympic medal winners, coaches and additional world-class competitors have endorsed a letter demanding a halt to the execution of a boxing champion and instructor, who is facing execution in Iran.

Escalating International Outrage

Amidst rising worldwide anger over the nation's escalating use of the death penalty as a tool of oppression, the forcefully phrased letter denounces the government's ruling to maintain the capital punishment of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, thirty, from Mashhad in north-east Iran, was taken into custody for taking part in national uprisings in 2019 and accused of aiding an resistance movement. He has spent half a decade in incarceration, where he has been abused and held in solitary confinement.

“Competition is meant to encourage optimism, unity, and courage,” the supporters wrote. “The execution of a champion for his political views is a clear violation on these principles and a caution to any competitor who dares to express dissent.

The statement said that the athlete's case was not an isolated one and emphasized the nation's past of sentencing to death competitors for their beliefs, including Habib Khabiri, captain of the soccer squad, and Fourouzan Abdi, leader of the women's volleyball squad. Apprehension and Unfair Trial

Call to UN

The call to stop the boxer's capital punishment comes after a 2023 statement to the UN high commissioner for rights, signed by in excess of a hundred rights specialists and organizations, demanding action to avert the competitor's death.

Execution Crisis

As per findings, there is an “execution crisis in Iran, which has reached alarming dimensions”.
